Effects of a Blue Room

Updated: Sep 5, 2020

Sroykham, Watchara & Wongsawat, Yodchanan. (2014). The Red and Blue Rooms affect to Brain Activity, Cardiovascular Activity, Emotion and Saliva Hormone in Women.

A study conducted by Watchara Sroykham and Yodchanan Wongsawat in November of 2014 based on the emotional effects of what the color blue and red can stimulate. However, the study is only done on women we will assume that the same effect happens to men. For this study we will only be focusing on the blue room. In a room of all blue color the participant was tested in a room 2.45 meters wide by 2.45 meters long by 2 meters high with 6500 kelvin light temperature and 806 lumens. The participant was tested for pulse rate, emotion and many others that are not important to this study. The study reveals that melatonin is sensitive to the blue wavelength. Blue light can stimulate alertness, at nighttime it can increase brain activity, alertness, mood and reduce sleepiness. In the study they concluded that the participant revealed high absolute power of the brain in the frontal lobes that are associated with expression and mood regulation. The blue rooms stimulate an increase pulse which stimulates the brain to form knowledge. The patients were then tested again in the morning and the melatonin levels were normal that relates with good sleep quality in the night.

The use of blue rooms is used in the TV show Greys Anatomy which is where I gathered the idea of such a room, and they use it because it gets the brain stimulated in the frontal lobes to help focus ideas and have high-performance levels. So, from this study I have gathered that having a blue room is beneficial for thinking and sleeping. But left in there to long and the effects become negative, you need just the right amount of time which seems to be around 15 minutes. Below are photos that show brain activity in the blue room with the time associated.
